誰も戦争を知らない時代が到来する。フランスの社会学者アルブヴァックスは、自分が経験しなくとも『集合的記憶』で過去を知ることが出来るという。時間が経過してもなお、戦争日記や手紙は人びとの目を捉えて離さない。沖縄土俗のシャ－マンは、死者を自身の肉体に憑依させ、死者の言葉で戦争を語る。さらに、戦争にまつわる幽霊は、社会的生命を宿したユ－レなのである。戦争日記や手紙、シャ－マンの祈り等にこめられた人々の感情をくみ取り、それを戦争記憶に焼き付けたのが本書である。ここから、沖縄戦は地べたや天界、海域からまなざす壮絶な戦いであったことが理解されるだろう。
本書の公刊後、新たに沖縄戦日記を通時間的に紹介する『沖縄戦日記』を出版する予定である。二冊の本を通じて、戦争を記憶化する意味が表出されるだろう。
