1892年8月、神奈川県生まれ。小説家。様々な職を経て作家となる。『鳴門秘帖』などで人気を博し、1935年より新聞連載が始まった『宮本武蔵』は読者を魅了、大衆小説の代表的作品となる。『三国志』、『新・平家物語』、『私本太平記』『新・水滸伝』など後世に残る大作を執筆。
