そして御坂峠の頂上にある天下茶屋に落ち着き、仕事をすることにするが、先に天下茶屋に来ていた友人で作家の井伏鱒二を甲府まで送っていき、ある娘とお見合いをし、結婚をしたいと思うようになる。
そして地元の人々と交流を重ねることで、「私」の富士山に対するイメージが徐々に変化していく……。
