《近世人物志》是金梁花了許多氣力，用了大量時間，將所謂「晚清四大日記」：翁同龢的《翁文恭日記》、李慈銘的《越縵堂日記》、王闓運的《湘綺樓日記》、葉昌熾的《緣督廬日記》裡面所記載的人物，按時日先後，整理排比，編成了收有六百餘人的晚清人物的書。他用這些日記的內容勾畫了為數眾多，形形色色的晚清人物，在近代史研究和清人傳記寫作中，成為繞不過去的借鑒。 金梁深知日記是一種原生的材料，其歷史的片段卻可復原許多近代政治舞臺上活龍活現的人物。他說：「其中知人論世，發潛搜隱，實可補正史所不及。」因此《近世人物志》形同「晚清四大日記」的索引，吾輩若能循此線索，證之以清代檔案及清人信札等原始資料，則對晚清人物及其事蹟，當可收探驪得珠之效。【秀威資訊科技股份有限公司製作】

字息侯，別署瓜圃老人。是滿洲正白旗人，系出瓜爾佳氏。
