 這本小書選錄了筆者在中年歲月走訪過的五處蔣介石在臺官邸或行館，所書寫的五篇旅記，期間前後跨越十年時間。筆者並非學史，這本小書雖然涉及歷史題材，但只是旅行的感懷，並非嚴肅探討或評論蔣介石的歷史地位或功過。本書篇末另附〈清泉幽居歲月〉一文。清泉，是張學良在臺的囚幽之地，位於新竹五峰鄉偏遠的山區。張學良發動西安事變，挾持蔣介石，改變了蔣介石剿共的立場，促成了國共合作。西安事變，曾被歷史學者認為是中國近代史的一大事件，它改變了中國近代史的命運，也改變了蔣介石的命運。遇見張學良，也等於是遇見蔣介石。
