 菁桐，舊稱「菁桐坑」，早期此地多野生菁桐樹而得名。菁桐坑包括現在的菁桐、白石、薯榔三個里，原本是人口稀少的散村型態的農業聚落。日治時代大正10年（1921），平溪鐵道通車後，開始大規模開採煤礦，菁桐坑一躍而成為繁榮的礦業聚落，人口最多時，高達一萬人。採礦結束後，人口嚴重外流，小鎮寂寥，近年來以礦業聚落人文風華吸引遊客造訪，而成為平溪線著名的觀光景點之一。
