About this ebook

From a Yorkshire veterinarian and a “wise and wonderful writer”: The New York Times bestseller and basis for the beloved BBC series of the same name (The Boston Globe).
In the rolling dales of Yorkshire, a simple, rural region of northern England, a young veterinarian from Sunderland joins a new practice. A stranger in a strange land, he must quickly learn the odd dialect and humorous ways of the locals, master outdated equipment, and do his best to mend, treat, and heal pets and livestock alike. This witty and heartwarming collection, based on the author’s own experiences, became an international success, spawning sequels and winning over animal lovers everywhere. Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the creatures in our lives.

This is a very interesting book, especially for those young country Vets who yet lack the kind of expertise that was called for are in the dark about how calving was accomplished in the late '30's. I imagine that this book will get a of few rave reviews by all of those who happen to have the pleasure of reading it. It is truly a book well written from the first to the finish. I myself, being ill equipped with firsthand knowledge about calving in any age found myself totally engulfed from the start until the last second when I finally put it down. I think that Mr. Herriot will be pleased with the results and also the sales of this literature.

I first read this book while in Basic Training for the US Army back in 1978. It still brings a smile to my face along with an occasional chuckle almost 40 years later. After my training, I found myself stationed in Belgium for over 6 years, living in two old farm houses for most of that time, due in part to those books by James Herriot. I was lucky enough to spend a few days in his Yorkshire and loved every minute of it. He takes you into his world in a colorful and wonderful way... Thank you for the Memori

About the author

James Herriot (1916–1995) was the pen name of James Alfred “Alf” Wight, an English veterinarian whose tales of veterinary practice and country life have delighted generations. Many of Herriot’s works—including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing—became international bestsellers and have been adapted for film and television. Herriot’s stories rely on numerous autobiographical elements taken from his life in northern England’s Yorkshire County, and they depict a simple, rustic world deeply in touch with the cycles of nature.
