Meet Detective Sergeant Alicia Friend. She’s nice. Too nice to be a police officer, if she’s honest.

Now assigned to DI Donald Murphy’s team, the annoyingly-perky detective finds herself in the grip of a northern British winter, investigating the kidnap-murders of two young women - both strikingly similar in appearance. When a third is taken, they have less than a week to chip away the secrets of a high-society family, and uncover the killer’s objective.

But Richard - the father of the latest victim - believes the police are not moving quickly enough, so launches a parallel investigation, utilising skills honed in a dark past that is about to catch up with him.

As Richard’s secret actions hinder the police, Alicia remains in contact with him, and even starts to fall for his charms, forcing her into choices that will impact the rest of her life.

CrimeFictionLover.com “An intriguing mix of police procedural and serial killer thriller, that will tease, involve and unnerve you. An entertaining and intriguing debut.”

Undercover Book Reviews: “Want a book with twists and turns? This is the one. It will not disappoint.”

AUTHOR Q&A

Q: Alicia Friend is kind of an oddball, isn’t she?

A: I’d say she’s unique. She knows who she wants to be and she doesn’t compromise, but most police officers she meets are dour and grumpy, and she sees how that impacts their personal lives. She doesn’t want to be as hard-nosed as many women sleuths in fiction, so radiates the sort of perkiness that sometimes grates on her fellow officers. But it’s who she is.

Q: Despite having a quirky woman sleuth as main character, the novel goes to some dark places.

A: Yes. I found that at one point I was trying to include ALL my research, and I’m really aiming for a thrill ride as much a straight police procedural. I originally included the sort of forensic details you get with Patricia Cornwell or Kathy Reichs, but it wasn’t right for this book. I keep it as accurate as possible, but it’s about the characters and how they uncover secrets, both externally and within the police.

Q: So who is your ideal reader?

A: Fans of serial killer books in general. If you like James Patterson, PJ Tracy or Steven James, Mark Billingham or Ian Rankin, Alicia Friend’s series could be worth checking out.

Q: What levels of violence and bad language are there?

A: Some of the violence is graphic, but the language ... that goes as strong as references to one’s posterior and some faecal synonyms, if you get my meaning. No “F” or “C” words, as I don’t think Alicia’s audience appreciates that.

Q: And how, exactly, do you come up with a character like Alicia?

A: She is based on a real person. But very loosely. The essence is there, although I had to invent certain aspects for dramatic effect. The parts from real life are: a ditzy, perky outer shell, yet possesses a fierce intelligence, true dedication, and being brilliant at her job.

Q: So the real Alicia Friend isn’t a serving police officer?

A: No, she isn’t. And if she was, I certainly wouldn’t say so here.

Detective Sergeant Alicia Friend: cop, analyst, cutie-pie. Obsessed.

Alicia knows she can be irritating to have around at first but, when given a chance, all her colleagues fall in love with her. She can’t explain it, but it’s how she works, how she gets her best results.

And it is exactly how she must work when a British diplomat is murdered on US soil, and the UK Ambassador orders her to observe the FBI’s investigation.

Soon, the murders expand to encompass a wider victim profile, each confessing their politically motivated lies on camera, and Alicia shows why her superiors overlook her quirks, and consider her one of the best minds in her field.

Drafting in her old partner, Alicia imposes her personality on the investigation, and shifts the focus from a politically charged arena to the madness of a psychopath who cannot seem to stop.

In Black In White is a fast paced serial killer thriller that reunites popular characters from the first Alicia Friend book, His First His Second, and introduces new ones to this very unusual British detective.

4 A Friend in Spirit

5 To Hide To Seek (novella for summer 2018)

A brutal international underworld. A lost girl. A PI determined to burn it all.

Former private investigator Adam Park got rich and retired in his mid-30s, living a quiet life of surfing and travel. But when a troubled young woman and her manipulative boyfriend disappear, Adam's old mentor cuts that retirement short.

Using cutting-edge technology, Adam soon learns both abuser and victim made an enemy of a seemingly small-time gangster, and tracks them from the UK, through the Parisian underworld, and into an international organized crime network that treats human life like a business commodity. To confront criminals on the rise, ruthless traffickers, and corrupt policemen, he must burn down his concepts of right and wrong, and draw upon the darkest corners of his psyche.

But these are facets of himself Adam has long denied exist. Bubbling just beneath the surface, he has kept that anger and violence caged all his life. Because he is a good person.

Isn’t he?

The Dead and the Missing is a suspense filled, often violent, international mystery & crime thriller, a journey that launches a PI from the relative safety of the corporate world to the hard-boiled existence required to get the job done. At any cost to his soul.

Review from Readers' Favourite:

The Dead and the Missing is loaded with twists and turns and excitement, and had me holding my breath in fear several times, never being one hundred percent sure of how it would end. A.D. Davies is a very talented author.

Author Questions

Q: So, a private investigator travelling the world?

A: Yes, I love exploring exotic locations, and I love detective fiction, so why not combine them into a thriller?

Q: Quite hard-boilded?

A: It has some violence, a bit of swearing but not excessive. Actually, I recently edited out the majority of F-words after a lot of feedback, so it's more in line with the character now.

Q: Have we seen characters like Adam Park before? Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series, Harlan Coben’s Myron Bolitar, John Connolly’s Charlie Parker . . . ?

A: Adam is perhaps ‘of a type’ but he’s very different from Jack Reacher in that he is less of a loner, and perhaps a little more cerebral. He knows how to handle himself, but he’s on a journey. Jack Reacher is absolutely certain of himself, while Adam is evolving. When we meet him in this first novel, he has never killed.

Q: Presumably that will change?

A: A lotchanges for Adam over the course of this novel. It’s a dark mystery, with action-adventure elements, but sits firmly in that noir crime genre where the protagonist isn’t black-and-white.

Q: Will there be more to come from Adam?

A: There are 5 sequels available now, and more planned for the future.

Q: And when you say ‘sequels’ does each book follow into the next?

A: While there are ongoing story strands that span the series – such as Adam’s personal life, and his battle with the darkness inside himself – each main plot is self-contained. While it would be advisable to read them in order, you absolutely don’t have to.

Q: Finally, what is the correct reading order?

A: Well, start with the free ebook edition of The Dead and the Missing then -

A Desperate Paradise

The Shadows of Empty Men

Night at the George Washington Diner (novella)

Master the Flame

Under the Long White Cloud

Q: And this isn’t your only series, it is?

A: No, I have the Detective Sergeant Alicia Friend series. She’s an unusually perky UK-based detective. Her first novel His First His Second is free on all e-book platforms, so it’s worth checking out if you like cops chasing serial killers. I also have a number of stand-alones which cover crime, murder, and straight-up action-adventure.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in Dark in Death, by J.D. Robb, the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense, and takes on a case of death imitating art...

It was a stab in the dark.

On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylan’s neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanel’s best friend, who had just slipped out of the theater for a moment to take a call, it felt as unreal as the ancient black-and-white movie up on the screen. But Chanel’s blood ran red, and her death was anything but fictional.

Then, as Eve Dallas puzzles over a homicide that seems carefully planned and yet oddly personal, she receives a tip from an unexpected source: an author of police thrillers who recognizes the crime—from the pages of her own book. Dallas doesn’t think it’s coincidence, since a recent strangulation of a sex worker resembles a scene from her writing as well. Cops look for patterns of behavior: similar weapons, similar MOs. But this killer seems to find inspiration in someone else’s imagination, and if the theory holds, this may be only the second of a long-running series.

The good news is that Eve and her billionaire husband Roarke have an excuse to curl up in front of the fireplace with their cat, Galahad, reading mystery stories for research. The bad news is that time is running out before the next victim plays an unwitting role in a murderer’s deranged private drama—and only Eve can put a stop to a creative impulse gone horribly, destructively wrong.

From the author of Echoes in Death, this is the latest of the edgy, phenomenally popular police procedurals that Publishers Weekly calls “inventive, entertaining, and clever.”

When a good man...
Becomes a bad cop...
But can’t remember why.

Following an attempt on his life, Detective Sergeant Martin Money wakes from a week-long coma with no memory of the previous three years. He quickly learns that corrupt practices got him demoted, violence caused his wife to divorce him, and his vices and anger drove his friends away one by one. On top of this, the West Yorkshire Police do not seem to care who tried to kill him, and he is offered a generous pay-out to retire.

But with a final lifeline offered by a former student of his, Martin takes up the case of a missing male prostitute, an investigation that skirts both their worlds, forcing him back into the run-down estates awash with narcotics, violence, and sex, temptations he must resist if he is to resume his life as the good man he remembers himself to be.

To stay out of jail, to punish whoever tried to kill him, and to earn his redemption, Martin attempts to unravel the circumstances of his assault, and—more importantly—establish why everyone from his past, his former friends, and his new acquaintances, appear to be lying at every turn.

Author A. D. Davies follows up his acclaimed debut novel “His First His Second” with the story of a man chasing a past that nobody wants him to recall.
