Winter 1918. Archivist Alexandra Milton is ousted from her post at a tranquil university library, ending up in a small, post-war Scottish town struggling to cope in the aftermath of World War One. Her job is to assess a valuable bequest of 17th-century Spanish documents. Meanwhile, demobbed soldiers pour back in their thousands only to find there is no work. In Glasgow, a dockworkers’ protest in a turbulent Clyde-side conflict suddenly teeters on full-blown revolution. The establishment panics leading to the infamous ‘Black Friday’. As she researches a rare volume of satirical interludes, censored at the time for provoking political and religious dissent, Alexandra finds eerie similarities with the harsh realities of post-WWI Britain. When it transpires the death of the benefactress was suspicious, Alexandra decides to dig deeper, and uncovers a sinister plot. Wakened out of her safe world, she is flung into the heart of the political maelstrom.
