In the fantasy kingdoms of Embury, L'Ortegia and others in this realm bearing similarities to British monarchy back in the day, equality among sexes is in full swing. There doesn't seem to be any role dedicated to a male or female per sey, but of course the name would be different depending on the role and gender occupying it. For example, male would be king and female queen. It is a complex book, in my opinion, as it involves politics, people with powers called nocturnes, and violent conflicts, which may need some focus to follow. There are times I wondered why the main characters decided to take certain actions, but in the end it all made sense. It was an action packed adventure to a happy ending. Lots of Intrigue and Magic! What a delightful fantasy novel! I liked how the author jumped us right into the action, showing a pivotal event from the hero’s past. The book had all sorts of elements that are always fun to see in fantasy, like court intrigue, hidden magic, forced betrothals, rebel camps, and much more. But I'll let you discover that for yourself if this kind of fantasy interests you. The book could be read as a standalone, but you would most likely appreciate the deeper background that reading the first book would provide. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
