Eventually, Tillie learns that Helen Shattuck was found hanging from the rafters of the school's storage room. The townsfolk assume she ended her life because of an unwanted pregnancy. But when Tillie discovers her diary hidden in the place where she died, she suspects that the teacher was murdered -- possibly by someone high up in the school district.
Now Tillie is determined to bring the killer to justice. To succeed, she'll need the help of Al Freitag, the handsome sheriff's deputy, and Orville, the student she's never given up on.
Alvin H. Franzmeier was born and raised on a southern Minnesota farm during the Depression. He served as the founding pastor of congregations in Ontario, Canada, and suburban St. Paul, Minnesota. After obtaining a master's degree in church history from Luther Seminary, St. Paul and a doctorate in pastoral counseling from Chicago Theological Seminary, he became dean of the chapel at Concordia University, St. Paul. After a few years the Holy Spirit called him to serve congregations in Houston, Texas for forty-five years. He and his wife, Sylvia, are now retired in south Texas. They are the parents of three children and the grandparents of six.
Lieutenant Peter Decker resents having to commit valuable manpower to a cold case simply because a rich woman says, "Jump!" But when a primary investigator in the Little case, now retired, suspiciously commits suicide hours after he and Decker talk, the detective realizes something evil's connecting the dots in two murders separated by a decade and a half. Wife Rina Lazarus offers a cool, rational outlook, as always, despite her growing concern for her husband's welfare—as past and present collide with a vengeance, catapulting Decker ever closer to the edge of an infinite dark abyss.

The Ice Man Succumbeth
Private-eye-in-training Mira James loves Minnesota’s crisp January days, as long as she can spend them in the arms of hunky Johnny Leeson. But when Mrs. Berns’s erratic Zamboni driving uncovers an icebound dead man, Mira’s cold-weather tranquility threatens to melt away.
With a frozen body in the lake and a freak January thaw descending on town, neither Johnny nor generous portions of high-octane comfort food are enough to ease Mira’s frazzled nerves. There’s big trouble brewing in Battle Lake. And if Mira can’t figure out who’s behind it, the next time she feels sub-zero temperatures, she may be sporting a toe tag in the town morgue.

It is 1938 -- a year when most Americans are still coping with the Great Depression and wondering how long they can avoid the inevitable war and Nazi threat in Europe.
When thirteen-year-old Orville Switzer discovers the bodies of twin sisters lying frozen beneath the snow in a St. Paul, Minnesota train yard, connections are soon linked to Germany. In their efforts to discover who murdered the twins and why, sheriff's deputy Al Freitag and his wife Tillie, a social worker for Orville's family, are suddenly plunged into a web of mystery, intrigue, mob violence, and an espionage ring involving pro-Nazi and German American Bund members.
Will the truth behind the murders be discovered? At what cost?
