Couldn't put it down. Very different from the genre I generally read and the page number turned me off at first but as soon as I started reading, couldn't stop. Going to buy the others in the series (first time I'm spending money to buy novels)

This series is frustrating, I thought about putting it down several times, but I can't leave a story unfinished. The writer is a woman, why is there so much sexism? The concept is interesting, but what what's with the over the top flag waving? That got annoying. Magic is a cool twist to add, but it's so inconsistent. Sometimes it can kill, sometimes it's just not there or not used. And the endless back and forth drama and out of control sexual desires - these people are fighting for their lives, I'm not sure that they'd have time for Peyton Place. I also can't see a group that's training to be an army working out by hurting each other so badly. They just couldn't risk injuries that couldn't be treated. It's just too bad the author couldn't stick with the riveting concept and leave out all the excess angst. BTW, there just would not be corn or other crops planted in those Midwestern states featured in the book if the war came in December! Some fact checking needed.
