Ratings and reviews

Long and tedious at times. My main issue is with historical inaccuracies. People born of indigenous mixed backgrounds from eastern Canada are not Métis. Métis people are descendants of those who fought with Louis Reil from what was part of the NWT. Historical novels need more indepth research.

Helps you to get a handle of how fast out lives occur, and the atrocities that people inflict on each other.

I read this book for a class assignment, and it was enjoyable. Wouldn't have continued to read it if it wasn't for an assignment, but since I had to read it, it was actually pretty good.

About the author

Annie Proulx is the author of eleven books, including the novels The Shipping News and Barkskins, and the story collection Close Range. Her many honors include a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and a PEN/Faulkner award. Her story “Brokeback Mountain,” which originally appeared in The New Yorker, was made into an Academy Award–winning film. Fen, Bog, and Swamp is her second work of nonfiction. She lives in New Hampshire.
