About this ebook

The Right of the Firstborn: A firstborn eighteen years of age or older may answer a call-to-arms from any noble family. The task, once completed, will mark the individual as an independent adult, free to leave their parents’ home, seek higher education or employment, purchase land, marry or not.

This right may not apply to women in Jessa Copeland’s city but, when she hears that Rowan Eckersley needs volunteers to travel with him to the Forgotten Isle, she disguises herself as a man and answers the young lord’s call-to-arms. Rowan means to find the Lost Goddess who has struck their city with an incurable plague, and kill her before the plague takes his mother’s life. Jessa hopes to win her independence. Risking life and limb seems to her a small price to pay for the opportunity to escape her engagement to Beau, a man who would never permit her to go to school or learn a trade.

Something else awaits Rowan and Jessa on the island, however, something far more dangerous than the goddess’s monsters and undead minions: true love.

This is the first installment in a companion series for Asta and the Barbarians. Each new novella will introduce a couple who will be aiding Asta in a new mission in the long-awaited sequel, Asta among the Chosen.

Jessa and the Lost Goddess by Becca Fox Chosen by the Masters #1 Fairytale feel to a fantasy novella perfect for Young Adult readers…and perhaps for some a bit precocious and younger, too. I have to say I have not read the book Asta and the Barbarians so was a bit lost as to who Asta of the Prologue was till I read the blurb BUT otherwise this is a fun standalone read that I thoroughly enjoyed. What I liked: * Jessa Copeland: young, beautiful, engaged, does not want to marry the man her parents have chosen for her, would like to go study, skilled, daughter, sister, seeks independence through quest * Rowan Eckersley: attractive, recently lost his father, lord, seeks a solution/cure for The Pink Plague, does not want to marry, is on a quest to save his mother from the plague * Anwyn: Goddess of Love, wily, focused, wishes to return to her place with her Father and the other god/desses, has a plan, is sometimes scary * Druce: God of Wisdom, wise, loving, the one who will decide whether or not Anwyn returns to her previous station * Francis: Jessa’s brother, disowned, seeks cure for the plague, intriguing character that should have a book of his own * The Island setting * The fairytale feel of the book – I used to LOVE fairytales and still enjoy them * Knowing there are other books to look forward to in this series What I didn’t like * Thinking about God/esses being willing to kill off innocent people to meet their own goals…whatever those goals might be Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series/by this author? Yes Thank you to the author for the ARC – this is my honest review. 4-5 Stars

I enjoyed this story. Jessa wanted to have freedom to choose her future and went on an adventure to find that freedom. Led by Rowan, she found more than she bargained for. Danger, action, some Godly interference, and love showed her what her happy future would be. I received a copy as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.
