Originally released to critical and public acclaim in 2013, Charles Forsman’s graphic novel debut follows James and Alyssa, two teenagers living a seemingly typical teen experience as they face the fear of coming adulthood. Forsman tells their story through each character’s perspective, jumping between points of view with each chapter. But quickly, this somewhat familiar teenage experience takes a more nihilistic turn as James’s character exhibits a rapidly forming sociopathy that threatens both of their futures. He harbors violent fantasies and begins to act on them, while Alyssa remains as willfully ignorant for as long as she can, blinded by young love.

Ratings and reviews

I'm one of those people who read this after watching the Netflix show to compare the two. Both are able to stand equally on their own with this book with a much more darker ending. It is a warning to enjoy your younger years before you reach the age where you're more likely to be held accountable for dumb actions. A more interesting premise on the "teenage love story" trope.

I watched the show first, and when I found out that it was based off of a boon I just HAD to read the book. The art and story are just so great and representative of the emotions of teens in love with a very different plot from any other teen love story that I've ever come across.

I found the show on Netflix, and I couldn't help myself from looking up what inspired it! It was so sweet and really made me think as simple as it was. Truly lovely. It broke me a little.... but I enjoyed every minute 💔💀
