The proposed book investigates brain asymmetry from the perspective of functional neural systems theory, a foundational approach for the topic. There is currently no such book available on the market and there is a need for a neuroscience book, with a focus on the functional asymmetry of these two integrated and dynamic brains using historical and modern clinical and experimental research findings with the field. The book provides evidence from multiple methodologies, including clinical lesion studies, brain stimulation, and modern imaging techniques. The author has successfully used the book in doctoral and advances undergraduate courses on neuroscience and neuropsychology. It has also been used to teach a course on the biological basis of behavior and could be used in a variety of contexts and courses.

About the author

David W. Harrison, Ph.D. is a clinical neuropsychologist, Director of the Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory, and an Associate Professor within the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech. He is also director of Neuropsychological & Counseling Services at Columbia Lewis Gale Medical Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Dr. Harrison received his Bachelor of Science in psychology/biology from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Science degree in biopsychology from the University of Georgia. He received his Ph.D. in biological psychology/neuropsychology from the University of Georgia and went on to complete a clinical post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology, geriatrics, and behavioral medicine. He is a Charter Member of the American Psychological Society and a Fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology. He has authored/co-authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications, including books, book chapters and journal articles with his students in the fields of clinical neuropsychology and neuroscience.

Clinical neuropsychology has become a field of major prominence dur ing the past several years, as well as a field of great complexity. As a result of the extensive amount of activity that neuropsychology has experienced recently, two major developments have emerged. First, several approaches have evolved regarding comprehensive neuro psychological assessment. There are presently several standard test bat teries in common use, as well as an approach to assessment that does not make use of standard batteries, but rather fits the evaluation accom plished to the particular diagnostic problems presented by the indi vidual patient. Second, a great deal of specialization has emerged, with assessment procedures developed for evaluation of specific types of neuropsychological deficit. The purpose of this volume is to review these developments, particularly with reference to their implications for application in clinical settings. The history of this book's development is of particular interest. Some years ago, the Veterans Administration became concerned with developing an optimal method of neuropsychological assessment for its many health-care related facilities. Initially, the problem was con ceptualized in terms of whether the VA should encourage wider use of the long-established Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery (HRB) or promote more extensive use of the recently developed Luria Nebraska Neuropsychological Test Battery (LNNB). A conference was funded to bring together authorities in clinical neuropsychology to dis cuss this matter and present a series of papers to invited psychologists from various VA facilities.
Casebook of Clinical Neuropsychology features actual clinical neuropsychological cases drawn from leading experts' files. Each chapter represents a different case completed by a different expert. Cases cover the lifespan from child, to adult, to geriatric, and the types of cases will represent a broad spectrum of prototypical cases of well-known and well-documented disorders as well as some rarer disorders. Case studies provide the student with actual clinical material - data in the form of observations of the patient, examination/test data, relevant history, and related test results - all of which must be integrated into a diagnostic conclusion and ultimately provide the patient with appropriate recommendations. Critical to this educational/heuristic process is the opportunity for the reader to view the thought processes of the clinician that resulted in the conclusions and recommendations offered. With the science of the disorder as the foundation of this process, readers learn how the integration of multiple sources of data furthers critical thinking skills.
