Thomas Pitter is a twenty-two-year-old lawyer of English descent who was born in Colonial Jamaica. He supported the abolitionist movement in London as a university student. But now he finds himself lost, lonely, and friendless since inheriting his uncle's plantation, which has forced him to return home to fulfil his uncle's final wishes.

Charlotte Pitter, a traumatised enslaved nineteen-year-old woman who was separated from her family as a child, is sold to Thomas and the pair form an unusual bond. Soon, they fall in love, but life is far from easy for them.

As an interracial couple, on either side of the colour line, they face many challenges but use their power for good to support the multi-ethnic workers and to tackle Mr Elliott, an old adversary who is out for revenge.

Thomas and Charlotte eventually have a child, but face ever more difficulties on the plantation as a couple and as parents. They must work together and rely on the support of the workers and Thomas’s family to ensure that everyone can escape the plantation in stages before it is too late. However, Mr Elliott has other plans, which could take Thomas and Charlotte to the edge.

A great read. Thought provoking, emmotional & funny all in one. This book is an easy read & I found I couldn't put it down once I started to read. I say an easy read in the sence it flowed well. The story can be a hard read at times in the sence of the history & the way certain people were treated at that time. Thank goodness Thomas and Charlotte were strong & fought back with thier hearts and not thier fists to change history.
