"I don't know, you guys," I said. "I'm starting to worry I'm not cut out for this relationship stuff. You know, not if it's going to be this complicated."
"What does that mean?" asked Lia.
"It means I have no idea what I'm doing! Books and movies always end with 'happily ever after.' You know, right when the relationship is getting started? I don't know what's supposed to come after that. And judging by how things are going with Jake so far, I'm not doing a very good job of winging it…"
Veronica's having a busy senior year. When she isn't at school or working at the Maribel Movie Palace, she's writing concert reviews for her zine, The Blank Slate, or helping her best friend, Lia, entertain her new famous friend, Clyde Kameron. She's even designing special effects for Lia's boyfriend, Jonathan's, indie horror film.
And oh, yeah, she's also dating her first-ever boyfriend, Jake—a sweet, smart, amazingly gifted musician who seems completely serious about her. So serious that he's already talking about spending the rest of his life with her!
But after witnessing her father walk out on her mother years ago, Veronica doesn't believe in "happily ever after" anymore. And she's worried that despite his promises, Jake won't really stick around forever, either.
When Jake's band gets the opportunity to go on tour, Veronica knows it won't be long before he leaves her behind, possibly for a long time. Why wouldn't he, when signing on for the gig could mean his big break? And once he's away, what are the chances he won't forget all about Veronica? Not very good, considering he'll be hitting the road with his ex-girlfriend—a talented and alluring drummer with an obvious lingering crush on Jake—and tons of groupies tempting him at every stop on the tour.
And Jake isn't the only one whose exes are causing headaches. Soon Layne Maxwell, a boy from Veronica's past, is back in town, and seemingly determined to make as much trouble for her as possible.
Veronica tries hard to be supportive of her boyfriend's dreams and optimistic about their future together. But while Jake seems to think their relationship will have the staying power of the Rolling Stones, Veronica's all but convinced it's doomed to flame out faster than a one-hit wonder.
