Eduardo Rosales muere en 1873. Los cuadros de historia todavía encuentran pintores empeñados en cultivar el género, pero poco a poco van cayendo en el olvido y dejando el puesto a una nueva corriente pictórica. En el último tercio del XIX los pintores dejan de interesarse por los temas históricos y concentran su atención en la técnica del color y sus complejísimas posibilidades. Ya no suelen preocuparse del paradigma o la grandiosidad anecdótica del tema. Lo que interesa verdaderamente a la pintura del último tercio del XIX es la propia ejecución pictórica.
