Intelligent Interactive Multimedia Systems and Services

Free sample

Intelligent interactive multimedia systems and services will be ever more important in computer systems. Nowadays, computers are widespread and computer users range from highly qualified scientists to non-computer expert professionals. Therefore, designing dynamic personalization and adaptivity methods to store, process, transmit and retrieve information is critical for matching the technological progress with the consumer needs. This book contains the contributions presented at the eighth international KES conference on Intelligent Interactive Multimedia: Systems and Services, which took place in Sorrento, Italy, June 17-19, 2015. It contains 33 peer-reviewed scientific contributions that focus on issues ranging from intelligent image or video storage, retrieval, transmission and analysis to knowledge-based technologies, from advanced information technology architectures for video processing and transmission to advanced functionalities of information and knowledge-based services. We believe that this book will serve as a useful source of knowledge for both academia and industry, for all those faculty members, research scientists, scholars, Ph.D. students and practitioners, who are interested in fundamental and applied facets of intelligent interactive multimedia.

The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. Other animals have stronger muscles or sharper claws, but we have cleverer brains. If machine brains one day come to surpass human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become very powerful. As the fate of the gorillas now depends more on us humans than on the gorillas themselves, so the fate of our species then would come to depend on the actions of the machine superintelligence. But we have one advantage: we get to make the first move. Will it be possible to construct a seed AI or otherwise to engineer initial conditions so as to make an intelligence explosion survivable? How could one achieve a controlled detonation? To get closer to an answer to this question, we must make our way through a fascinating landscape of topics and considerations. Read the book and learn about oracles, genies, singletons; about boxing methods, tripwires, and mind crime; about humanity's cosmic endowment and differential technological development; indirect normativity, instrumental convergence, whole brain emulation and technology couplings; Malthusian economics and dystopian evolution; artificial intelligence, and biological cognitive enhancement, and collective intelligence. This profoundly ambitious and original book picks its way carefully through a vast tract of forbiddingly difficult intellectual terrain. Yet the writing is so lucid that it somehow makes it all seem easy. After an utterly engrossing journey that takes us to the frontiers of thinking about the human condition and the future of intelligent life, we find in Nick Bostrom's work nothing less than a reconceptualization of the essential task of our time.

It is a great pleasure to share with you the Springer LNCS proceedings of the First World Summit on the Knowledge Society - WSKS 2008 that was organized by the Open Research Society, NGO, http://www.open-knowledge-society.org, and took place in the American College of Greece, http://www.acg.gr, during September 24–27, 2008, in Athens, Greece. The World Summit on the Knowledge Society Series is an international attempt to promote a dialogue on the main aspects of a knowledge society toward a better world for all based on knowledge and learning. The WSKS Series brings together academics, people from industry, policy makers, politicians, government officers and active citizens to look at the impact of infor- tion technology, and the knowledge-based era it is creating, on key facets of today’s world: the state, business, society and culture. Six general pillars provide the constitutional elements of the WSKS series: • Social and Humanistic Computing for the Knowledge Society––Emerging Te- nologies and Systems for the Society and Humanity • Knowledge, Learning, Education, Learning Technologies and E-learning for the Knowledge Society • Information Technologies––Knowledge Management Systems––E-business and Enterprise Information Systems for the Knowledge Society • Culture and Cultural Heritage––Technology for Culture Management––Management of Tourism and Entertainment––Tourism Networks in the Knowledge Society • Government and Democracy for the Knowledge Society • Research and Sustainable Development in the Knowledge Society The summit provides a distinct, unique forum for cross-disciplinary fertilization of research, favoring the dissemination of research that is relevant to international re-

Traditionally, signalprocessingtechniqueslayatthefoundationofmultimedia data processing and analysis. In the past few years, a new wave of advanced signal-processing techniques has delivered exciting results, increasing systems capabilities of e?ciently exchanging image data and extracting useful kno- edge from them. Signal Processing for Image Enhancement and Multimedia Processing is an edited volume, written by well-recognized international - searchers with extended chapter style versions of the best papers presented at the SITIS 2006 International Conference. This book presents the state-of-the-art and recent research results on the application of advanced signal processing techniques for improving the value of image and video data. It also discusses feature-based techniques for deep, feature-oriented analysis of images and new results on video coding on ti- honored topic of securing image information. Signal Processing for Image - hancement and Multimedia Processing is designed for a professional audience composedofpractitionersandresearchersinindustry.Thisvolumeisalsosu- able as a reference or secondary text for advanced-level students in computer science and engineering. The chapters included in this book are a selection of papers presented at the Signal and Image Technologies track of the international SITIS 2006 c- ference. The authors were asked to revise and extend their contributions to take into account the many challenges and remarks discussed at the conf- ence. A large number of high quality papers were submitted to SITIS 2006, demonstrating the growing interest of the research community for image and multimedia processing.
