This story about a Bosnian family during war time. Their papa leaves to join the Liberation Army. The rest of the family, mama, Viktor, and Marina, are left behind. Each day refugees stop and rest in their home, telling stories of the horror that they had faced before fleeing. One refugee that stopped had two goldfish that he asked Marina if she would care for him. Viktor, Marina and their mother had to flee out of the country. Viktor brought the fish to their pond in hopes that they would be able to survive a little longer. This story relates to social justice because the family struggles with the joy of being reunited with their papa, the long journey home and the fear of what their home will be like when they return. After months of living at the camp, they are told it is safe to return home. Although their home is burned down, they run to the pond to find it full of goldfish. This shows that even though life has it hardships, there always is something that can put a smile on our faces.
