Parkman went on an expedition along part of the Oregon Trail through Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas in 1846. He went from Westport (Kansas City) up to the Platte River and on to Fort Laramie. He joined some Sioux to go to the foothills of the Medicine Bow Mountains. He returned to Fort Laramie and went southwest to Pueblo and Bent's Fort. Parkman turned east and followed the Santa Fe Trail to Westport.
