Texte intégral révisé suivi d'une biographie de Friedrich Nietzsche. Ce volume contient "Le Cas Wagner, un problème musical" et "Nietzsche contre Wagner, pièces justificatives d'un psychologue". Seul pamphlet de Nietzsche, "Le Cas Wagner" transpose sur le mode comique et satirique le problème esthétique que le musicien pose au philosophe. Ce qui est attaqué est d'ailleurs moins le compositeur de "Parsifal" que la "névrose" de l'Allemagne wagnérienne de la fin du XIXe siècle, soit une idéologie riche d'obscurantismes, de nationalisme, d'antisémitisme et de mépris de l'intelligence que Nietzsche résume sous l'expression de "crétinisme de Bayreuth". C'est le "wagnérisme" qui l'éloigne de Richard Wagner, pour qui il éprouve un mélange d'admiration et de répulsion. Le second texte du volume, "Nietzsche contre Wagner", écrit quelques jours avant son premier accès de folie, consiste en un réarrangement d'aphorismes sur la musique de Wagner déjà publiés dans ses précédents ouvrages, notamment "La Volonté de puissance" et "Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra".
