Longtemps, son objet a hésité entre la recherche d'une classification hiérarchisée des êtres vivants (la systématique) et la prise en compte de leur répartition spatiale (la taxo-chorologie). D'autre part, la Société créée en son nom a manqué de consistance : divergences de vues, voire polémiques ; la "Commission de Biogéographie" instaurée chez les géographes n'a été qu'une enveloppe abstraite sans rôle incitateur.
