Piper Prescott, proprietor of Spice It Up!, has persuaded Doug Winters, the mild-mannered vet she’s been dating, to demonstrate Indian cuisine at her shop. But before Doug’s presentation of classic chicken curry is completed, Ned Feeney, local handyman, bursts in with news of a murder.

Sandy Granger, the director of a local production of Steel Magnolias, was found strangled in the third-floor balcony of the Brandywine Creek Opera House. Sandy, it seems, had not endeared herself to cast or crew. Complaints about her ran the gamut from her management style to her lack of people skills. Everyone connected with the production falls under suspicion, including Piper Prescott’s BFF, Reba Mae Johnson, who made it well known how unhappy she is that she was cut from the cast.

When the spotlight for the dastardly deed shines on Reba Mae, Piper rushes to her friend’s defense. Who among Sandy’s detractors was angry enough to wrap a silk scarf around her neck—and pull tight? Will Piper succeed in solving the case before she becomes the killer’s encore performance? And will she ever learn just how to prepare the perfect curry? As delicious as it is charming, this entry in Gail Oust’s mouth-watering Spice Shop Mysteries, Curried Away, is sure to delight both old fans and new.

Book 1
Murder comes well-seasoned in this charming mystery featuring a smart and spunky new amateur sleuth, small-town Georgia spice shop owner Piper Prescott

Piper Prescott, a transplanted Yankee living in the South, has got her sass back. She might be down, but don't count her out. "Change of life?" she asks. Bring it on. Recently divorced, Piper decides to pursue a dream she's secretly harbored: owning her own business, Spice it Up!, a spice shop in her adopted hometown, Brandywine Creek, Georgia. But Piper's grand opening goes awry when the local chef who's agreed to do a cooking demo is found stabbed. Not only did Piper find the body, she handled the murder weapon and doesn't have a witness to her alibi, making the case look like a slam dunk to brand new police Chief Wyatt McBride. Desperate to uncover the truth—and prove her innocence—Piper enlists the help of her outspoken BFF Reba Mae Johnson to help track down the real culprit. The pair compile a lengthy list of suspects and work to eliminate them using their own creative brand of sleuthing techniques including stakeouts, breaking and entering, and one very unorthodox chocolate pie. When Piper narrowly avoids being a victim of a hit-and-run, she knows she's getting closer to the truth, but can she catch the killer and clear her name before she becomes the next victim?

A captivating start to a new series featuring an unstoppably fabulous new crime-solving heroine, a colorful cast of small town characters, and more than a pinch of Georgia charm, Rosemary and Crime by Gail Oust is sure to delight fans of cozy mysteries.

“Far superior . . . this uniquely capricious mystery will engage readers from the very first page to the surprising conclusion.” —Publishers Weekly on Murder Is Dicey

Welcome to Serenity Cove, a peaceful Southern community where the residents like to play dice, play golf and, when foul play moves in, play detective.

When Claudia Connors returns from Vegas with her new husband in tow, Kate McCall and her friends in the tight-knit community of Serenity Cove are dying to meet the man she eloped with, the actor Lance Ledeaux. And Lance is every bit as handsome and charming as Claudia said, right up to the minute he persuades the Babes to take part in a play he’s written and starring in. But it’s not long before Kate discovers that the B-list actor’s real talent lies in frivolously squandering Claudia’s considerable nest egg.

The tension is thick as rehearsals begin. When the prop gun turns out to be real and Lance is shot dead, all eyes turn to Claudia as the main suspect. With the local sheriff convinced of Claudia’s guilt and threatening to put her behind bars for life, it’s up to Kate and her friends to start digging for clues to find out who played the starring role in murder.

Welcome to Serenity Cove, a peaceful Southern community where the residents like to play dice, play golf and, when foul play moves in, play detective.

When it comes to gardening, Kate McCall is known for having a brown thumb, but when the Serenity Cove garden club hosts an event featuring a celebrity botanist—who’s also a former college roommate of Kate’s friend Rita—she plants herself in the audience with all the other Bunco Babes. Before the evening can even get off the ground, though, the guest speaker and her boyfriend are rushed to the hospital with food poisoning, where he eventually dies.

Convinced that her boyfriend’s death was no accident and that she too was meant to die, the famous botanist begs Kate to investigate. Glad to have a chance to use her newly acquired detective skills, Kate starts digging for clues—even when that means adding Rita to the list of suspects. And as the trail grows more tangled and treacherous, Kate realizes she’ll have to weed out the killer quick, before she’s the next thing they plant in the ground.
