In the pages that follow, it is my hope that you find this collection of Cockney and British rhyming slang both informative and engaging. For some, it may evoke memories of words heard long ago. For others, it may enhance your understanding and enjoyment of British television, films, and song lyrics. And I hope everyone enjoys a few laughs.

A word of caution. Some readers may find certain language within this publication offensive. As is often the case with slang expressions, some reflect the prejudices of their users, some are vulgar, and some are explicitly offensive. Although I have not included all potentially offensive language, there are likely enough expressions to disquiet sensitive readers.

About the author

I was born in Islington, a borough of London to English parents. My dad, Arthur Sutton, grew up in Battersea. My mum, Gladys New, and her family are from East Finchley.

 

My native language is an old version of Londoners’ English spoken by my parents who came of age in the 1920s and 1930s after completing their formal education at age 14. I absorbed their slang and idioms during the 20 years I lived at home plus all our visits during the time we had together.
