This was just silly - why I read it is beyond me tbh. But it is compelling enough to get through - despite being on par with that king of stupid dystopia the movie Birdbox which I still lament for robbing me of two hours of my life. Considering that the events occur after a nuclear war and the characters still have the ability to use twitter or access facebook is ludicrous, that the narrator would obsess over a murder mystery when faced with the aftermath of mass conflagration is ridiculous as is the motivation. Indeed at many points in the story you wonder what is the point of this story, as its all over the place as if the writer is just dialling in the plot. Pop culture references unashamedly abound, very specifically in conversation - almost as if trying to identify with what has been/or is cool to claw some credibility out this 405 page waste of space and time. 10/10 on the dumb scale. One brownie point for implying a warning about the Trump presidency. Avoid.

A thrilling page turner. Once I started I couldn't stop reading and got through it in 2 days. This nuclear post-apocalyptic/whodunit/thriller is a lot of genres in one, but I couldn't get enough of it. It is written through the eyes of Jon an historian keeping a record of the enfolding events after nuclear fallout. The twists and turns keep you questioning which characters you can trust throughout. This would have easily been 5 stars had the ending not felt a bit rushed and brief compared to the rest of the book. But nonetheless a great book that had me on the edge of my seat, would definitely recommend!

I have read hundreds of books but nothing quite like this. A rare, sometimes strange, blend of a murder mystery and the apocalypse. I thoroughly enjoyed this, so much so I read it in one sitting. The reason for the four stars is simply because I didn't like the ending. It was a bit too fast and I didn't like the religious spin to the climax. Definitely recommend for those that enjoy a mystery and an immediate apocalypse aftermath.
