This timeless collection contains selections attributed to J.S. Bach, his son C.P.E. Bach, and others. Generations of students have studied the volume's "Menuet in G Major," "Musette in D Major" and the "Prelude in C Major" from the first volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Dr. Palmer provides the texts to the instrumental settings of chorales and arias found in this work, as well as a brief biography of the Bach family.
"His distinctive achievement was to present in its final shape the fabric of polyphony." — Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians This assessment of Bach's accomplishments is best realized in his organ music. This comprehensive volume — reproduced directly from the authoritative Bach-Gesellschaft edition — reprints 25 sets of preludes and fugues, i.e. compositions written as pairs. Twelve arias from the Bach cantatas selected and edited as flute duets. These bass arias as written by Bach consist only of the vocal line (1st Flute) and basso continuo (2nd Flute). The bass figures have been omitted, but each aria-duet is presented in its entirety. Excellent material for teacher-pupil duets.
"His art was of an encyclopedic nature, drawing together and surmounting the techniques, the styles, and the general achievements of his own and earlier generations and leading to a new perspective." — Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. This informed assessment of the genius of Bach's works can be applied with greatest accuracy to The Well-Tempered Clavier. This highly influential work is monumental in the history of Western music. It represents not only the culmination of Bach's own maturation process, but also the galvanization of the emerging style and structure of modern keyboard music. The grace and fecundity of The Well-Tempered Clavier have thrilled audiences, musicians, and composers for centuries. Mozart, when rapidly advancing to the height of his mastery, had but to read a manuscript copy of The Well-Tempered Clavier and his style developed a new polyphonic richness and depth of harmony. Beethoven studied all the accessible works of Bach profoundly (including The Well-Tempered Clavier) and frequently quoted them in his sketchbooks, often with direct bearing on his own works. Chopin is nowhere more characteristic than when he shows his love of The Well-Tempered Clavier in his Etudes and Preludes. It was Schumann who, in a series of maxims for young musicians, said "Make The Well-Tempered Clavier your daily bread." This remarkable volume contains all 48 preludes and fugues, from Books I and II, in all major keys, reproduced directly from the authoritative Bach-Gesellschaft edition. The fine engraving is beautiful, clear, and easy to read. These elegant pieces, which vary in difficulty, are available complete in one low-cost, convenient Dover edition.
All 15 of Bach's Two-Part Inventions have been transcribed for solo guitar! Providing a wealth of technical and musical challenges, these transcriptions are perfect for improving sight-reading skills and can be ideal new additions to the performance repertoire of any serious musician.
Contains works representing Bach's enormous output for keyboard, ranging from more simple works found in The Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach and Two- and Three-Part Inventions, to Preludes and Fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Suites, and Partitas. This publications contains 88 selections.
This series of publications is actually comprised of five narrowly focused series: Piano Music from His Early Years, Piano Music Inspired by Women, Dances of… and Humor in Piano Music. They are a result of in-depth musicological study by Dr Hinson. Each series provides assistance in the areas of performance practice and historical backgrounds as they relate to each piece.
The six Partitas were originally published individually by Bach between 1726 and 1730. A complete one-volume edition appeared in 1731. Dr. Hans Bischoff used that original complete edition in producing this current edition. The "Overture in the French Manner" is included, and is also known as "Partita in B Minor." It originally appeared in 1735. Introductory notes, preface, and a table of embellishments are included, along with performance footnotes.
Willard A. Palmer updates this popular volume by turn-of-the-century British educator, Walter Carroll. The easiest keyboard works of J.S. Bach and others are presented primarily as Carroll edited them, with complete fingering, tempo, dynamic, and articulation markings. Improvements over Carroll's edition include wider line spacing and the restoration of Bach's ornaments that were previously omitted.
Bach's Six English Suites have been newly engraved from the acclaimed Hans Bischoff edition. These fresh, easily read pages will make lessons and work towards performance more simple and exciting. Included is a lengthy preface by Bischoff, discussing materials used to develop this edition, along with various footnotes throughout the text to clarify performance.
