“Karolina Dalca, Dark Eyes” is a delight to read and author MR Noble is a wordsmith whose writing is playful, light and sure, and powerfully evocative: I can smell Carpathian pine, ocean salt, and blood over-scented with lavender. Noble writes fight scenes with intensity that leaves one bruised and breathless. Usually, I skim these bits, but I engaged fully in the choreography of Karo’s meditative katas, and flexed muscle, fang, and claw to do battle. And I love Karo for being the heroine to do battle, even when it is with herself. Without knowing what she might find, Karolina runs to her fate, meets carnage, betrayal, despair, but also love. She falters, but does not give up. And her observations, as she learns about life and love, make me look to the next page for another beautiful metaphor, clever pun or quip. Initially skeptical of a Northern Ontario setting, my desire to be transported was well satisfied as Karo’s rural home is decimated in an attack by the Shadow Forged – felt a thrill, even, that it happened here in Canada. I am waiting, impatiently, for more.
