When the distant hum of a helicopter shatters the peace of Ash and Caleb Solomon’s fishing trip, it’s a stark reminder that Beartooth’s isolation is no longer a shield. Their secluded mountaintop community, once a sanctuary, has become a precarious target in a world spiraling into chaos.
As longer, harsher winters descend due to the government’s geoengineering program, Beartooth’s residents race to fortify their defenses, find new energy sources, and secure enough food to endure. But the challenges of survival go far beyond the elements. The outside world is unraveling, and Beartooth’s ruthless neighbors are watching.
When conflict finally arrives at their doorstep, retreating may be their only option. But will stepping back protect them—or only delay the inevitable?
In a world of growing threats, the fight for survival begins with unity, ingenuity, and the courage to confront the unknown.
Kim McMahill started out writing nonfiction, but her passion for adventure, stories of survival against the odds, and speculating about the future of humanity and our planet, soon turned her attention towards fiction. Along with her novels, she has published over eighty travel and human-interest articles, and contributed to a travel story anthology. Growing up in a small community surrounded by mountains, traveling the world, and enjoying a rewarding career with the National Park Service, has given her the opportunity to live in amazing places, experience incredible adventures, and witness many changes in our world, all of which have helped shape her stories.
