The Story of a Baron

What will she discover when she reads between the lines?

Jeffrey Althorpe is in need of more income for the struggling Sommers barony. As a peer of the realm, he’s not allowed to work, but if he’s able to earn money from a book he’s written— anonymously, of course—no one will be the wiser. A dowry would be easier, but then he would have to find a wife willing to marry a baron.

While her brother, the Earl of Everly, is away on one of his lengthy expeditions, Lady Evangeline is left behind in London to spend her days creating exquisite embroideries and reading books. She's about to buy The Story of a Baron at The Temple of Muses when Lord Sommers suddenly appears. He’s intent on buying the very same book, but there's only the one copy.

Desperate to discover what changes his publisher might have made to his story - without letting on he’s the author - Jeffrey suggests they read it together. Evangeline's sterling reputation could use a bit of scandal, she decides, and so she agrees to Lord Sommer's proposal.

As the two read The Story a Baron, Evangeline realizes some of the characters and settings are just a bit too familiar. And a bit too close to home. Was she the inspiration for the baron’s secret love, a bold, brash woman whose reputation is in tatters?

With her own reputation suddenly in question, Evangeline finds her life imitating art. How can the book have a happy ending when she wishes she’d never purchased The Story of a Baron?

"If a maid wants nothing but a husband, how can a brother give her everything?"

The illegitimate sister of the Earl of Trenton, former maid Lily Harkins has spent the past two Seasons attending balls and soirées and learning everything she needs to know to be a proper lady of the ton. She's also garnered a group of suitors—four, in fact—and every one of them has indicated their intention to make her their wife. Trouble is, she can't decide if they're truly fond of her or of her dowry.

William Overby has spent almost his entire life working at Wellingham Imports. Despite his poverty-stricken past in the Seven Dials, his position as a clerk has afforded him all the trappings of the middle class and what he thinks is a satisfying life. That is, until the day he meets Lady Lily. The beautiful blonde, a cousin of his employer, reminds him of a maid he once met at Vauxhall Gardens. A maid he saved from certain ruination. A maid he's been unable to forget since that fateful night. Could Lady Lily be the same girl?

Having read the stories in the gossip sheets suggesting his sister is being courted by no fewer than four aristocrats, Gabriel invites Lily to spend the summer in Staffordshire. He's determined to hear her side of the stories before deciding which man is good enough to be her husband. He wants her to have a life of privilege, after all.

Lily decides a few tall tales told over evening meals should help cast the men in a not-so-flattering light. But what of the young man she met at Wellingham Imports? The clerk who reminds her so much of the honorable man from her past? Can she convince the earl that William is the man for her? A struggle with class and the expectations of her brother may override The Desire of a Lady.

If every man is a master of time, then what of the man who loses track of it?

A viscount's son and a bare knuckle boxer, Michael Cunningham is more interested in building his fortune than spending time at the Marriage Mart. But long ago he promised his mother he would get married "if not before, then on the eve of my twenty-eighth birthday".

Reminded by his sister, a duchess, that his next birthday is his twenty-eighth birthday, Michael realizes he has much to do in the three weeks he has to keep his promise – not the least of which is to secure the only woman he has ever considered for a wife – the younger daughter of his business partner and the very woman his sister has just hired to be a governess!

The duchess will rescind her offer of employment to Olivia Waterford, but there's no time for courtship, no time for banns to be read, and certainly no time to wait for a wedding to be planned once Michael proposes. His sister has the perfect plan, though. In order to meet his mother's deadline and ensure a quick marriage, she insists Michael must ruin Olivia!

Olivia has felt affection for her father's business partner since the day he rescued her from a rake. But since the gentleman never showed a romantic interest in her during his frequent visits to her family's home in Shipley, imagine her shock when he climbs into her bed and is discovered by her father! Ruined, indeed!

Now married and living in London, Michael is sure Olivia despises him for what happened, while Olivia is quite sure her husband has feelings for her sister and simply wandered into the wrong bedchamber that fateful Tuesday night.

Will a week be enough time for Michael to court his new wife and convince her of his affections? Or will he regret his last-minute efforts to accomplish too much in too little time? Only time will tell in "Tuesday Nights".

When it comes to matchmaking, will the third time be the charm?

Orphaned at seventeen, Emma Fitzsimmons lives at the London finishing school her late father, George, arranged for her to attend. With no prospects for marriage but having experience as a bookkeeper at her father's hat shop, Emma decides to pursue a position as an accomptant. But who will hire a woman in 1802 London?

Her roommate's brother, Thomas Welllingham, inherited his father's import company and quickly expanded operations to include a way to transport goods across Great Britain. Convinced someone is embezzling from Wellingham Imports, he solicits advice from his banker, Sir William Burroughs.

Charged with Emma's financial welfare, Sir William recommends Thomas hire her to audit his books. Thomas does so, arranging for her to work at his manor in Chiswick and be a companion to his sister Christiana. And he may have just the man for Emma.

Todd Vandermeer, a wealthy broker with the East India Company, has decided to marry. His apparent low birth and excessive height make courting awkward, although once he meets Emma, he's sure she's the one for him. Emma's best friend Deborah, a midwife at a home for unwed mothers, may be a better choice, though. The tall, willowy woman has an unfortunate past that may prove too much to overcome, although not in a way she expects.

Emma's new landlords, an older couple who are rather overt in their affection for one another, seem intent on introducing her to the wealthy Gregory Grandby. With a reputation as a rake, Gregory has already made his choice in a future wife, a young lady who is rather good at keeping secrets—especially him.

With one couple having found love despite their class differences and three couples looking to find love, one banker is determined to see it all work out in his favor. Or will it be the butler who prevails in the epic Regency The Promise of a Gentleman?
