About this ebook

Once a thief, always a thief, and if he can’t win the heart of the boy he loves, he’ll steal it.

Billy Redsky’s made one of his biggest dreams come true, but there’s a problem. Even though the boy he loves is mere footsteps across the hall from his bedroom, they might as well live a country apart because claiming René Oshawee’s heart is more difficult than Billy anticipates.

Much to Billy’s disgust, René can’t accept his true self, so he’s incapable of loving someone else. And all he cares about is living a life the chief and his wife foresee for their youngest son.

If Billy is to finally have what he truly desires, he must stop René from running away from who he really is and face the man in the mirror, or what they share will never blossom into true love.

Toy Soldiers is the second installment of the When We Were Young series following two Queer Indigenous teenagers Billy Redsky and René Oshawee as they grapple with sexuality and identity. I’m happy that this series with LGBTQ2S+ Indigenous representation exists. It deals with many heavy but important topics and feelings, I was impressed with Maggie Blackbird’s way of writing these aspects so seamlessly. This book deals with a fair few sensitive issues – bigotry, homophobia, substance abuse, physical abuse, etc. This book picks up from where book one ended. While I somewhat enjoyed the first book, this one delves more into Billy and Rene’s relationship, their love for each other, as well as their fears. Rene struggles with coming to terms with his sexuality and his feelings for Billy. It shows how they find themselves through each other. There’s so much depths to this story and it’s characters, it felt like it progressed naturally and realistically, the relationships and feelings of the characters are complex. I thought this book was well written and structured extremely well. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions in this review are my own.
