A Man of Character

Magic of Love

Book 1
Locked on Love

An award-winning magical romantic comedy in which a bookstore owner must choose between fantasy and reality after realizing the men she's dating are characters she'd created years before...

"Locke breaks down tropes--the popular jock and the thoughtful poet--and puts cracks in their shining armor with humor and insight...Blending romance with whimsical fantasy, Locke's story offers up a look at the expectations of youthful fancy vs. the realities of an adult love." - Library Journal

_________________________________________________________________________

What would you do if you discovered the men you were dating were fictional characters you'd created long ago?

Thirty-five-year-old Catherine Schreiber has shelved love for good. Keeping her ailing bookstore afloat takes all her time, and she's perfectly fine with that. So when several men ask her out in short order, she's not sure what to do ... especially since something about them seems eerily familiar.

A startling revelation -- that these men are fictional characters she'd created and forgotten years ago -- forces Cat to reevaluate her world and the people in it. Because these characters are alive. Here. Now. And most definitely in the flesh.

Her best friend, Eliza, a romance novel junkie craving her own Happily Ever After, is thrilled by the possibilities. The power to create Mr. Perfect -- who could pass that up? But can a relationship be real if it's fiction? Caught between fantasy and reality, Cat must decide which -- or whom -- she wants more.

Blending humor with unusual twists, including a magical manuscript, a computer scientist in shining armor, and even a Regency ball, A Man of Character is a whimsical-yet-thought-provoking romantic comedy that tells a story not only of love, but also of the lengths we'll go for friendship, self-discovery, and second chances.

About the author

A lover of romance novels since the age of ten (don't tell her mom!), Margaret Locke declared as a teen she'd write them when she was older. Once an adult, however, she figured she ought to be doing grownup things, not penning love stories. Thank goodness turning forty cured her of that silly notion. Margaret is now happily ensconced back in the clutches of her first crush, this time as an author as well as a reader. Because love matters.

Margaret lives in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Virginia with her fantastic husband, two fabulous kids, and three fat cats. You can usually find her in front of some sort of screen (electronic or window); she's come to terms with the fact she's not an outdoors person.

A Regency time-travel romance in which a modern-day Austenite's ultimate dream comes true when she lands in the arms of a Regency duke, only to learn some fantasies aren't all they're cracked up to be when he proves less than a Prince Charming...

"Literary magic takes widowed Jane Austen fan Eliza James to Regency England for a chance to win the heart of the likewise-bereaved Deveric Mattersley, Duke of Claremont, in this charming time-travel romance.  Despite the unlikely premise, the unforced unfolding of this magically-created romance is refreshing...the author has effectively captured the emotional essence of a historical romance and created an engaging love story that will leave readers eager for more of the series." - Publishers Weekly BookLife

"A Matter of Time should be on every fantasy, paranormal, contemporary and Regency romance reader's "to read" list...I would definitely recommend this novel - you will be charmed, captivated, have a few good laughs and shed a few tears as you cheer Eliza and Dev on to find their happy every after ending." - Marsha, KeeperBookshelf.com

"I fell in love with this book, just as I did with the Jane Austen classics. There's a new Mr. Darcy in town." - Annie, ARC reader, reviewer for The Write Review and ChickLitPlus.com

Can a man with a past and a woman from the future forge a love for all time?

Nobody would blame widowed doctoral student Eliza James for giving up on Happily Ever After; at twenty-nine, she's suffered more loss than most people do in a lifetime. But Eliza's convinced her own hero is still out there, waiting for her, just like in the beloved romance novels she devours. Every Jane Austen-loving girl deserves a Darcy, right?

Only Eliza doesn't dream of a modern-day affair: she wants the whole Regency experience. When a magical manuscript thrusts her back two hundred years into the arms and life of one Deveric Mattersley, Duke of Claremont, however, Eliza realizes some fantasies aren't all they're cracked up to be, especially when her duke proves himself less than a Prince Charming.

Convinced he's at fault for the death of his wife, Deveric Mattersley has no interest in women, much less marriage. Determined to atone for his sins, he decrees himself content to focus on running his family's estates, and on raising his son-until the mysterious Mrs. James appears. Who is she? What does she want? And why does she make Dev's blood run hot in a way no woman ever has?

A charming time-travel Regency romance full of wit and humor, A Matter of Time reminds us that, like books, you can't judge people by their covers, and that love often comes when least expected.

A Regency-to-present time travel romance in which a scandal-scarred Regency lady leaps forward to modern-day Virginia in search of the education and independence she's always wanted, only to entangle herself with a career-consumed computer science professor.

"This is the perfect marriage between a contemporary romance and a Regency. The miscommunications that result from the clashing worldviews, so well captured in the prose, are by turn humorous and tear-jerking. While time-travel romances are not uncommon, this combination of elements--a magical manuscript that creates the spark of true love, a passionate woman so devastated by the scandals of her past that she'll run away to the future for a chance at independence and happiness, and a workaholic whose kind heart only needs to open up to find true happiness--works together in a unique and satisfying way...A satisfying mash-up of contemporary romance and Regency with a determinedly independent heroine and a workaholic-with-a-heart-of-gold sure to please fans of both subgenres." - Publisher's Weekly BookLife Prize

What if your soul mate doesn't want Happily Ever After?

Independent, spirited Amara Mattersley may live under scandal's shadow, but at least the nineteenth-century Regency society judging her is familiar. That's all about to change when she finds herself in twenty-first-century Charlottesville, Virginia--and locking horns with one very befuddling, very male, UVA professor.

Computer science professor Matthew Goodson has no time for love--no time for anything, actually, but his quest for tenure and his obsession with the screen. The last thing he expects is to get side-swiped by this adorably odd British miss. Yet something in her calls to him, pulls at him, in a way unknown--and uncomfortable.

Can past and present blend together into a mutual future? Or will old wounds and new complications sabotage any chance at a twenty-first century happily ever after?

A USA Today Bestseller, The Demon Duke is the first in Margaret Locke's new Put Up Your Dukes Regency historical romance series.

_________________________________________________________

“Locke has outdone herself with this sensitive, splendid Regency and her portrayal of its disabled hero. Damon Blackbourne has a little-known, completely misunderstood neurological disorder (now known as Tourette syndrome) that causes involuntary, uncontrollable nervous muscle twitches.

The real value to this romance is Locke’s depiction of the lovers overcoming the social obstacles that others create out of fear and suspicion of Damon’s disability. This tale of hope and courage will appeal to Regency readers across the board.” Publisher’s Weekly starred review, March 2, 2018

“Regency romance lovers will savor this story, interspersed with perfect amounts of romance, intrigue and redemption.” - InD’Tale Magazine, October 2017

A man tormented by a painful secret meets the bookish miss who just might save him from himself...

Behind every good man is a great secret.

Banished to Yorkshire as a boy for faults his father failed to beat out of him, Damon Blackbourne has no use for English society and had vowed never to return to his family’s estate at Thorne Hill, much less London. However, when his father and brother die in a freak carriage accident, Damon must take up the mantle of the Malford dukedom and chaperone his sisters through the London Season–his worst nightmare come to life.

He never planned on Lady Grace Mattersley. She stirs him body and soul--until she stumbles across his dark secret.

Bookish Grace much prefers solitude and reading to social just-about-anything. Her family may be pressuring her to find a husband, but she has other plans, such as writing a novel of her own. She has no idea, however, how to deal with the all-too-alluring Duke of Malford.

Will she betray him to the world? Or will she be his saving Grace?

If you love "beauty and the beast" stories, you'll love The Demon Duke.

"Margaret Locke's fourth book, The Demon Duke, puts her squarely in the senior ranks of Regency romance novelists. The balls, the social interactions, the rigidity of Regency society's arcane rules, all come to life in a charming way. And, of course, there are a number of happily ever afters. An excellent read, and I can't wait to see what adventures await the panoply of engaging characters." - P. A. Duncan, author of A War of Deception

The critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling biography of John F. Kennedy, by Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s Hardball.

“What was he like?”

Jack Kennedy said the reason people read biography is to answer that basic question. What was he like, this man whose own wife called him “that elusive, unforgettable man?” In this New York Times bestselling biography, Chris Matthews answers that question with the verve of a novelist. We see this most beloved president in the company of friends. We see and feel him close-up, having fun and giving off that restlessness of his. We watch him navigate his life from privileged, rebellious youth to gutsy American president. We witness his bravery in war and selfless rescue of his PT boat crew. We watch JFK as a young politician learning to play hardball and watch him grow into the leader who averts a nuclear war. Matthews’s extraordinary biography is based on personal interviews with those closest to JFK, oral histories by top political aide Kenneth O’Donnell and others, documents from his years as a student at Choate, and notes from Jacqueline Kennedy’s first interview after Dallas. As Matthews writes: “I found a fighting prince never free of pain, never far from trouble, never accepting the world he found, never wanting to be his father’s son. He was a far greater hero than he ever wished us to know.”

“Filled with the vitality and spirit that made Jack Kennedy such a magical figure. Chris Matthews shows the cunning and determination beneath that magic. It’s an awesome and delightful book.” —Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs
