About the author

Maxwell E. Johnson is professor of liturgical studies at the University of Notre Dame and a pastor in the ELCA. He is author, coauthor, and editor of over nineteen books, including The Apostolic Tradition (Hermeneia Series, 2002) and Praying and Believing in Early Christianity (2013). He is also a past president of the North American Academy of Liturgy.
