This book was slow, anticlimactic, and ends on a cliffhanger meant for you to want to get the next one. Even series of books typically still have some sense of an ending. This is more like watching the first episode of a TV series. Absolutely no finality to it at all. I would have stopped reading it half way through if i knew there was no actual ending as it was pretty boring and i was just trying to stick with it.

4.5 stars for a gripping start to a new series. I chose to review an ARC of this book after seeing ads and recommendations for A Harmless Little Game by Meli Raine, all over the internet. It intrigued me enough to go check it out, and if you haven’t read this previous series- (This is kind of a continuation, but standalone at the same time.)- then you should. Book 1 is free at the moment. It’s a 3 parter, just like these will be as well. There was a ton of suspense in this story, there’s alot going on of course and we see the return of characters from ‘Harmless’ while focusing mostly on Jane and Silas’s story. Jane was in the Harmless series, but I’m not going to tell you how or why. Jane is determined to prove her innocence after being smeared with charges she couldn’t defend against before but only one other person is prepared to give her a hearing. Her old teacher, Alice. My head was spinning from all the twists and turns this book took, that left me with my mouth hanging open. There were some lighter moments to that helped to brighten up the story and of course those steamy scenes that were just so hot. The ending came quicker than I expected, although not in the way you’d thing. This IS a Meli Raine novel so it’s got a cliffhanger. A mind-blowing WTH cliffhanger. Can’t wait to find out what happens next.

I never completed the Harmless Trilogy, so I was at a disadvantage going into this book. Yes, there are gaps that only reading the Harmless Trilogy could fill, but otherwise, this book was a pretty good read for me. There are a lot less improbable and unreasonable story lines so far. Silas & Jane are enigmas and each page uncovers a layer to their personalities that keeps you wanting more. I enjoyed the action and drama that this book delivered and the cliffhanger at the end would definitely encourage you to get the next installment in the series. I am already looking forward to it. I voluntarily read & reviewed an ARC of this book.
