About this ebook

For generations, the Republic of the Sphere has known a Golden Age of peace. Mighty BattleMechs, once kings of the battlefields, now aid the reconstruction of war-torn worlds. But when terrorists destroy the interstellar communications net, each planet is thrust into isolation. Suddenly old hatreds resurface and a people who have never known war face the prospect of learning its meaning firsthand.

Sam Donelly is one of the best LumberMech jockeys on the planet, wielding his ’Mech’s fifteen-foot chainsaw with the grace and precision of a surgeon. Caught in a skirmish with revolutionaries, he soon finds himself a rebel recruit. But Sam is no mere lumberjack, and if his true identity is discovered, the repercussions could be disastrous not only for Sam, but for the entire Republic. . . .

The first installment of the mechwarrior series turns out to be a rather enjoyable read. Given the authors tendency during the first half of the book to use repetitiousness phrases, I was worried that it was going to impede the reading. Thankfully, the book's story is rife with political intrigue and crafted well enough that the pages keep turning. The events are less about the mechs and more about the people and their interactions; rest assured, however, that there is still giant robots melting each other.

I enjoyed reading this book. I have always been a fan of the games and just now started reading the book series. The story starts slow as other reviews have mentioned but keep you entertained as you progress through the story. The ending was great and I am convinced I will continue on to the next one. I recommend trying this book if you like action, suspense and Mechs.

Although I've been reading Battletech novels since they came out nearly 20 years ago, I wasn't thrilled about the post jihad inner sphere. After putting these books aside for 5 years, I have a new found love for them as we begin to get out Mechwarrior and Classic Battletech games back. A wonderful book.
