loved and hated. hit all the beats of a beauty and the beast retelling, and i really enjoyed how the author wrote the dragon and his speech and quips. the characters kept me reading. i didnt like how it seemed more like telling and not showing. there would be long paragraphs/ pages of thoughts interspersed with a little dialogue. sometimes long thoughts in dialogue so i lost the character conversations. i also found myself skipping over/ skimming sections. seems like it would have been served better as a small trilogy. there is an abrupt difference from the tower/ court/ forest settings. I would have liked other character perspectives, especially kasia, and i know thats more common now than maybe when this was originally written. a little part of me feels like the author was too good with making the dragon a hard character, because their affection seemed a little forced, and maybe spurred on because of the magic? for all the over explaining that is never explained. and it seems like he can read her mind after an incident, but she never questions it, nor is it explained because we are only in her perspective. author is good with suspense and creating an atmosphere, just felt like it could have been much shorter.

Disappointed. Expected this book to be a bit more feminist. The main character is 17, but her "love interest" kidnapped her, and is hundreds of years old apparently. The climax of the book feels very rushed and confusing as well, so I am disappointed.

Naomi Novik is one of my new favorite authors. I came here after reading the Scholomance series, and this one didn't disappoint. Will definitely be picking up more from this author. I love her worldbuilding.
