Pierre Janet (1859-1947) a popularisé en 1903 le terme "psychasthénie". Il s'agit d'une affection mentale caractérisée par un affaiblissement de tonus vital (baisse de la tension psychologique) et dont les principaux symptômes sont la dépression physique et morale, un sentiment d'incomplétude et la perte du sens du réel, une tendance marquée aux phénomènes anxieux et aux manies et aux obsessions. Dans le tome I Janet étudie le contenu intellectuel des obsessions, c'est-à-dire le sujet auquel s'appliquent les pensées du malade, l'idée du démon, du sacrilège, du suicide, ou tout autre.
