It's not just stepmothers who are wicked.

Bitsy's insolent grandson has become too much of a problem for her to handle. She's come up with a solution, though. If she can just convince a doctor to go along with her sinister plan, everything will be  just perfect ....

"The prospect of being the human parts drawer society reaches into to cure its neediest patients would drive anyone mad." - Kelsey Reed, Life First

Strong-willed Kelsey Reed must escape tonight or tomorrow her government will take her kidney and give it to someone else.

She’ll need the help of her true love, Luke, to make this dangerous escape. This dystopian future Kelsey lives in was forged by survivors of pandemics that wiped out 80 percent of the world's population. Here, life is valued above all else. The mentally ill are sterilized, abortions are illegal and those who refuse to donate an organ when told are sentenced to death.

Determined not to give up her kidney or die, Kelsey and Luke enlists the help of a dodgy doctor to escape. The trio must disable the tracking chip in Kelsey's arm for her to flee undetected. If they fail, Kelsey could be stripped of Luke, her kidney and everything else she holds dear.

This page-turning thriller with a touch of romance, is the first in the Life First dystopian book series. The thrills and romance continue in our dystopian future in Second Life (book 2 of the series) and Third Life: Taken (book 3 of the series).

A synthetic stem cell called a biomite can replace any cell in your body. They are infallible. As our percentages of biomites rise, we become stronger, we become smarter and prettier. We become better.

Can we resist the temptation of perfection? Are we still human when our bodies are replaced by synthetic replications?

If biomites exist, laws will be imposed to prevent excess and abuse. Those with 50% biomites will no longer be considered human.

They will be halfskin.

Halfksin: The Vignettes is a compendium of short stories found throughout the Halfskin trilogy, a harbinger of what humanity’s pursuit of perfection may look like.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

WHAT GENRE DO YOU PREFER?

Science fiction, dystopia, technothriller and, to some extent, young adult. I do have a series of novellas in the vampire genre. Yeah, I know. Doesn’t fit. That character, Drayton, came out of nowhere when I was at a community theatre production of Dracula. I figured that an immortal vampire would more likely become compassionate and wise as he grew older. The technothriller Halfskin is similar to vampires in that technology promises immortality and complete control of our bodies. But then what?

WHY A SYNTHETIC STEM CELL?

Organic life is too nilly-willy. We’re limited by our DNA. Give it to the scientists to perfect this vehicle that carries us around because it is a vehicle. If we no longer have organic bodies, if every one of our cells is replaced by something manmade all the way down to the neurons and synapses, then what are we? What if our world is just a computerized environment, ala The Matrix? Would we know the difference? Look, we’re printing organs today. I’m not, but someone is. Some genius has figured out how to push play and heart or liver or kidney comes down the chute. Halfskin takes the idea into the distant future and explores whether this leads to more happiness or just more of the same. Because more money, more problems.

DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER JOB BESIDES AUTHOR?

Day job, I’m a college horticulture teacher. Writing is a passion. No plans to change it.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?

Breathe.

WHAT TALENT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE?

Omnipresent supergalactic oneness.

IF WE HAD A CUSTOM THAT ALLOWED US TO EAT OUR CHILDREN, WHAT KIND OF SAUCE WOULD YOU USE?

Ketchup, the miracle condiment.

ARE OUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES STEALING OUR SOUL? AND IF SO, DO YOU MAKE

OFFERINGS TO YOUR TOASTER?

I offer white bread and the toaster gives back crunchy, brown bread. Never doubt a true miracle.

Grab all four Prophecy of Light books in one volume.

Book 1 - Trapped
The darkness that has been searching for Kady has finally caught up. Begin this exciting journey today ...

Kady always knew the nomadic life she was living was because her aunt was hiding from some dark force, one Auntie described as magic. When Kady awakens in the middle of the night with her house crumbling around her, Auntie hustles her into the night, hides her, and engages in a battle of magic symbols that set the dark sky ablaze.

While Auntie succeeds in hiding Kady, she is captured during the battle. Kady, now realizing her aunts admonitions about the power of words were very real, must choose. She can do as her aunt had always warned her -- to run far away if the two were separated. Or she can search for her aunt.

As strange powers emerge, Kady begins to realize there's magic trapped inside her. Will this new magic help her succeed in retrieving her aunt?

Book 2 - Unleashed
Kady must learn to unleash the magic trapped inside her if she is to help the mage Pylum rescue her aunt.

As Kady learns her way around the Temple of Light and takes classes to help her understand magic, she makes new friends like Jasper and learns more about the mysterious mage who helped her in book one: Akilah.

Will Kady be able to unleash her power, and what else might she find when her bonds are broken?

Book 3 - Foretold
Kady has rescued her aunt from the dark mage Zygam, but now her friend is his ally.

Kady must learn what makes Zygam tick in order to defeat him when he attacks in just 10 days. As she learns more about the mage who has hunted her for 10 years, Kady realizes defeating him may be harder than she thought. Will the secrets she unearths make this battle impossible for her to fight?

Book 4 - Fulfilled
The final story in the Prophecy of Light series is here!

Kady has been told she is the child of light of the prophecy? But is she. Is her choice the key to everything, or is there more to the prophecy than she's been told?
