Radio Free Asia received these comments from Perry Link: "A concise and accurate account of the events in spring, 1989, and of what happened to some of the main players in the time since. Some people cling to memory, some fear it, and some seek to erase it. Dan Southerland clarifies and preserves it." Prof. Perry Link is a co-translator of the Tiananmen Papers (published in 2001), which detailed the Chinese government's response to the 1989 Tiananmen protests.

Eyewitness accounts from the author brought me back to 1989 where I was one of these students at the demonstration.
