About this ebook

Few American novels written this century have endured in th heart and mind as has this one-Ray Bradbury's incomparable masterwork of the dark fantastic. A carnival rolls in sometime after the midnight hour on a chill Midwestern October eve, ushering in Halloween a week before its time. A calliope's shrill siren song beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two inquisitive boys standing precariously on the brink of adulthood will soon discover the secret of the satanic raree-show's smoke, mazes, and mirrors, as they learn all too well the heavy cost of wishes -- and the stuff of nightmare.

I can get what some readers think is genious about this book, but I'm mostly finding myself annoyed by the chaotic writing style and cringing at the plentiful corniness.

I really liked the story. I'm an adult, but there were parts that were quite creepy. The language used was also a breath of fresh air. The story was sweet and dark. Would have been 5 stars but it felt like a little something was missing. The ending was a bit corny, but I still greatly enjoyed the book.

This incredible novel has entered my personal Pantheon of Greatest Books. I am blown away by how great it is. I had to stop and ask myself whether it might be the greatest book I have ever read. I decided fairly quickly that it is not (that place is still held by the Lord of the Rings) but this should absolutely not be considered a criticism. Something Wicked This Way Comes is the greatest American novel I have ever read, for sure. What makes this story so great? Bradbury's marvelously expressive use of English. "Malodorous steams of music" is one small example; there are hundreds, thousands more. At times I was so captured by his writing that I found myself nearly missing the story, which would be a tragedy because here we have a superbly creative idea in the hands of an eloquent storyteller. This book is not to be missed!
