About this ebook

One surprise deserves another.

“Think you’ll need any help, Sergeant?” Lieutenant Wynn asked Matt Rudd.

“I don’t think so, sir,” Rudd said.

“Kuzniki is a dangerous, but he doesn’t know I’m here.”

“O.K.,” Wynn said. “I’m going to lunch.”

With his back to the door, Rudd hadn’t seen Kuzniki enter the hotel lobby. As he turned around, Kuzniki’s hand darted to a shoulder holster and he swept out a .38 automatic. Rudd froze in position, then slowly raised his hands.

“You must be slowing down, Matt,” Kuzniki said. “First time I’ve been able to take you.”

“It’ll be the last, too,” Rudd said angrily.

“That’s right, Matt—I’ll see to that.”

About the author

Richard Deming (1915-1983) was a solid and reliable pro whose crime-writing career extended from late 1940s pulps to early 1980s digests. He also wrote several volumes of popular non-fiction late in his life.He is most likely to be remembered as one of the most prolific contributors to Manhunt and the early days of Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and as a paperback original writer, sometimes of novels based on TV shows (Dragnet, The Mod Squad, and under the pseudonym Max Franklin, Starsky and Hutch). He was also a frequent ghost for the Ellery Queen team on paperback originals and for Brett Halliday on lead novelettes for Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine.
