I can't believe Ruth Rendell wrote this terrible book. Wexford alternates between smug condescension, preening quoting of obscure literary sources and blatant contempt for .... well to say more would be a spoiler but spare yourself and read anything else.

Edgar Award–winning author Ruth Rendell (1930–2015) has written more than seventy books that have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. A fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (London), she is the recipient of the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Crime Writers’ Association.
