the first half of the book is dedicated to setting up the romance that will drive the plot of the book. in the second half of the book we're introduced to a new character and it becomes clear very quickly that this will be the real love interest in the series. this kind of nullifies all of the time spent on the romance in the first half. also the riddle was pretty bad. it was so obviously either hope or love (which is such a cliche). lastly the map is literally England, which would be ok if so many fantasy authors didn't do exactly this. we need to up our fantasy map game people 🙄

This book and series is so hyped up I bought the whole of it. So I'm going to be brutally honest. This first book (and that's all I've gotten through so far,) is a bad retelling of beauty and the beast. An impoverished town on the outskirts of an enchanted land where everyone is cursed. A girl is kidnapped by a beast with a surly and standoffish attitude.... not to mention the heroine of the story... I wouldn't even consider her a heroin. She is a teenager, and due to being impoverished, is forced into her masculine, so she hunts and fights amongst other things and knows nothing of how to be an actual woman. This book is giving pick me girl vibes to the max. I'm flabbergasted to be honest. I'll probably come back with more as I continue the other half of the book, if I can.

this book is Not the best out of the 5 for this series. I see a lot of reviews that are low. the second book is what makes the first book MUCH better. it brings everything together. the second and third books are the BEST. so if you are going to judge the whole series by the first book you are making a HUGE mistake. trust me and read the second one and you will feel a lot better about the first book. this is one of her best series. I like her crescent series even more. not a big fan of the Throne of Glass series. I had to make this review because of the others I just read. I had to let people know. as with all these long series they tend to get better each book.
