Springtails are the most numerous and wide-spread insects in terrestrial ecosystems. They are important ecotoxicological test organisms and have been used extensively to indicate the effects of environmental pollutants and different agricultural regimes on biodiversity in soils. This comprehensive work by the co-author of The biology of millipedes is the only single-volume review of the biology of springtails in the English language to appear this century. The book covers classification, behaviour, physiology, evolution, ecology, and ecotoxicology. An extensive reference section with more than 2500 entries is included together with a complete list of all Collembola genera, a list of studies on the effects of chemicals on springtails, and reference to species checklists for most countries of the world.

The Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Host-Parasitoid Interactions

The Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Host-Parasitoid Interactions
        Michael Hassell 2000년 6월 8일
        2
This book examines our current understanding of the population dynamics of one kind of interaction - that between insect parasitoids and their hosts. Parasitoids are amongst the most abundant of all animals, and make up about 10% or more of metazoan species. Almost no insect species escape their attack. Host-parasitoid interactions were first modelled over fifty years ago, but for many years there was little good empirical information on the important factors that affect host and parasitoid populations. The models were very simple, and their predictions rather divorced from the complexity of what was visible in the field. Now, better data is available on many components of host-parasitoid systems, from field observations and laboratory and field experiments, and this allows a much closer correspondence between models and data. In particular, the past twenty years have seen major advances in our understanding of how host-parasitoid interactions are influenced by spatial processes, by age-structure effects, and by competition from additional host and parasitoid species. The result is a body of theory that makes direct contact with real systems in the field, and provides us with a detailed understanding of what underpins a whole area of population dynamics. In this book, Michael P Hassell pulls the theory and field data together to present an elegant illustration of the way in which ecological studies advance.

        Parasitic Worms Of Fish

        Parasitic Worms Of Fish
        Hartford Williams 2002년 9월 11일

Fish are a unique group which harbour some 30,000 species of helminths that do not occur in other vertebrates. This book deals specifically with parasitic worms of fish. It covers every aspect of their biology including identification, life-cycles, hostparasite relationships and ecology. It discusses approaches to studying parasitic worm infections, preference of species for particular host species, preference for dwelling in certain organs and tissues, biogeography, seasonality of infections and how parasites have evolved in parallel with their hosts. The book concludes with discussions of fish worms causing diseases in nature and in fish-farms. This section also addresses the value of parasitic worms in extending knowledge of the environments in which fish and their parasites dwell, from the use of worms as indicators of pollution or for determining the location, migrations, and feeding behavior of fish stocks.

With the growth in fish farming such parasites have considerable economic as well as scientific significance.; This volume provides an account of these helminths and reviews how studies on fish worms have increased current knowledge of worm biology in general.; The bibliography contains over 3500 references and an appendix summarizes important information on biochemistry and physiology of fish worms.

Population Cycles: The Case for Trophic Interactions
        Alan Berryman 2002년 11월 7일

For over sixty years, understanding the causes of multiannual cycles in animal populations has been a central issue in ecology. This book brings together ten of the leaders in this field to examine the major hypotheses and recent evidence in the field, and to establish that trophic interactions are an important factor in driving at least some of the major regular oscillations in animal populations that have long puzzled ecologists.
