About this ebook

As she faced the flames, she realized two things with absolute certainty. She could bear the heat, but she could not bear losing him.

She’s shy, he’s stoic…not the hardest personality traits to overcome, but Sophie Carson and Roman “Chief” Proudfit have their work cut out for them.

Sophie has a crush on the silent-but-studly firefighter next door. She’s been pining away silently while secretly helping the hardworking man by mowing his lawn—which he thinks is being done by her nonexistent husband and/or boyfriend. He’s definitely not big on neighborly chitchat, but with her stutter, that suits Sophie just fine. But now a misunderstanding at a bar has put him even further out of her reach.

Roman’s difficult upbringing on an Indian reservation is a sore spot, so when he thinks Sophie is taking advantage of poor people for medical trials at her workplace, he lets her know exactly what he thinks. But when he discovers he misunderstood, he’s man enough to admit it…and also that he should have opened his eyes to his beautiful, sensitive neighbor sooner.

As the couple gets closer, each helping the other overcome lifelong pains, for the first time in years, Roman has something to live for other than his job. And, as he discovers when Sophie puts herself in danger, something even bigger to lose…

** Shelter for Sophie is the 8th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Susan Stoker - Shelter for Sophie (Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Book 8) Ms. Stoker is a remarkable story teller. She can weave an adventure that will take you to your characters location and keep you there until the last page. The “Chief”, Roman Proudfit, gets his story told. The author introduces us to Since Chief is Navajo some Navajo culture and ceremony. While Ms. Stoker admits she embellished the ceremony and language, ‘in the name of romance’. She is correct, the language is beautiful. Sophie Carson is about perfect. She has a big heart and helps as many people that she can. Including the homeless on the street. Like many other of Ms. Stoker’s books, the female character has a disability. Sophie shutters with all “S”’s and has been made fun of her entire life. The good news is that the Navajo’s believed that people who were born with disabilities were to be revered rather than reviled. As Chief and Sophie become acquainted their attraction to each other grows stronger. However, each have a lot of baggage to overcome from her disability and his Native American background. As they overcome each hurdle, Sophie’s life is being threatened from a Narcissist jerk that doesn’t want Sophie to help those in need if it means he doesn’t get the recognition that he thinks he deserves. Chief can’t imagine Sophie not being part of his life and he will save her at any cost. I highly recommend this book and it can be read as a stand-a-lone or you can enjoy, as I have, the entire series.

A new favorite. This is book 8 of the Badge of Honor series; while this book works well as a standalone, due to appearances by characters from earlier books as well as (brief) references to some of those storylines, I'd recommend reading the series in order to get maximum enjoyment from this story. I've been eagerly awaiting this book for a while now, really since first being introduced to Roman, that enigmatic Native American firefighter who doesn't mind that his nickname is "Chief". I was a little concerned that his leading lady wouldn't match up but Sophie more than held her own, and I loved the way she was willing to go toe-to-toe when needed whether advocating for the burn patients she worked with or homeless people she'd befriended, just like she wasn't afraid to tell off Roman when he deserved it, all in spite of her shyness. As for Roman, I think I'd have to say he's my favorite in a long line of yummy leading men from this author. A sexy firefighter who's not afraid to admit when he's wrong, protective and caring, hiding a vulnerability of his own under that stoic exterior, well, he was just about irresistible. Add in the intriguing cultural background and I was completely hooked. With two extraordinary main characters, a well-paced storyline utilizing Roman's Native American heritage that kept me engaged, plus a whole host of great secondary characters both new and old, this is a new favorite from this author. 5 stars. I absolutely loved Shelter For Sophie (Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Book 8) by Susan Stoker.  It's a fantastic must read for all romance fans or anyone who enjoys a well crafted plot and engaging characters.  You can't go wrong with any Susan Stoker book, but this is Ms. Stoker at her very best, and my new favorite hands down. This is the story of two people who have both been tested and looked down upon due to factors beyond their control, and each has been deeply affected in their own way.  Sophie Carson is a beautiful young woman who works with burn victims and just happens to stutter.  She may have a speech impediment, but is one feisty lady who stands up for what she believes in and does whatever she can to help those less fortunate. Roman "Chief" Proudfit, a member of the Navajo Nation, is a firefighter at Station 7 and Sophie's hot neighbor.  Chief may be more than a bit jaded because of the prejudice he has encountered as a Native American, but that man knows how to treat a lady.  Tough on the outside, he has a big heart, and can't tolerate others being taken advantage of. Sparks fly between these two, but because of a misjudgement on Chief's part, he's going to have to prove his sincerity to Sophie.  What follows is a wonderful story of two people, both in need of acceptance and appreciation for who they truly are inside.  Shelter for Sophie is full of suspense, action, and danger, including a suspected arsonist, a narcisistic doctor, and a few lost souls in need of a home.  And of course there's plenty of touching romance and hot action between the sheets. Along with Sophie and Chief, there's a wonderful cast of other characters, several who have been featured in previous books.  While it was great to catch up on many of Chief's friends, I also enjoyed reading about new characters. Sophie has some wonderful gal pals who each have their own struggles.  I hope to read about several of the secondary characters in following books, and I hope this series doesn't come to and end anytime soon. Along with truly enjoying reading about their adventures, I learned some things from both Sophie and Chief.  Sophie reminded me that we shouldn't allow things perceived by others as flaws to get in the way of living or to expect less of others because of it.  I also enjoyed learning about customs of the Navajo and their deep appreciation for life and simple things.  Chief reminded me to stop and take time to look up at the stars. There is an element to this story that some may perceive as paranormal, while to others it's just a matter of customs and beliefs.  I felt it further enriched the story and is so well incorporated in the plot and deeply imbedded in a character's nature that by the end of the story I was so drawn in that I completely lost my skepticism. On a side note, I'm glad I don't live in an area where coyotes are prevalent.  You'll have to read the book to find out why. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed Shelter for Sophie and highly recommend it. This is an absolute must read that was impossible to put down.  I was so drawn into the story that several chores went undone until I finished it.  It's not only going on my keeper shelf, but I'm also sure I will reread in the future, which I don't often do.  But this book is absolutely worth a second read.  I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this title.  Thanks Susan Stoker!
