First edition of this remarkable book on paleography and diplomatics. In this work, Maffei describes, amongst much else, the so-called Ravenna papyri in cursive Latin script, many of which he transcribes for the first time (several are now lost). But most importantly, it is here that Maffei states the principle of the basic unity of Latin script (in contrast to Mabillon's theory of five different ones), "thus opoening the way to modern paleography"--Mazzoleni, "Paleografia e diplomatica", pp. 8 ff.
