It's sad that Friedreich Engels reviewed Carlyle's "Past and Present" and deemed him a polytheist. Carlyle obviously saw a spectrum of inspiration manifest in historical men and honored those who heroically moved toward Truth, and where the heroic stopped short, Carlyle measured it against the Biblical canon and found it inadequate but not totally false. This work refutes the accusation of polytheism.
