The story is interesting. The writing style is on the simplistic side. I'm not certain if I would call that a bad thing as it is written exclusively in first person. Since it is written from the perspective of a 17 year old girl from a farming village with no mention of education past general literacy and the skills to live in her world simple is not inappropriate. I would say it is original, but not being familiar with her inspirations, I will say it is new to me.

loved and hated. hit all the beats of a beauty and the beast retelling, and i really enjoyed how the author wrote the dragon and his speech and quips. the characters kept me reading. i didnt like how it seemed more like telling and not showing. there would be long paragraphs/ pages of thoughts interspersed with a little dialogue. sometimes long thoughts in dialogue so i lost the character conversations. i also found myself skipping over/ skimming sections. seems like it would have been served better as a small trilogy. there is an abrupt difference from the tower/ court/ forest settings. I would have liked other character perspectives, especially kasia, and i know thats more common now than maybe when this was originally written. a little part of me feels like the author was too good with making the dragon a hard character, because their affection seemed a little forced, and maybe spurred on because of the magic? for all the over explaining that is never explained. and it seems like he can read her mind after an incident, but she never questions it, nor is it explained because we are only in her perspective. author is good with suspense and creating an atmosphere, just felt like it could have been much shorter.

Novik's writing blew me away, with a quality and standard all its own. Even as this book is 400+ pages, there was never a dull moment. The only reason I did not rate this 5 stars is because the main character is a bit of a Mary Sue... would've preferred her to have a little more room for growth...and while the romance was sexy, I still found it a little lacking.
