"I started story-writing in 1925. The next 12-13 years I was writing stories as and when time would permit. During those years I was teaching in a school.'' "Today, while going through the 13 stories included in this book "Ashru and Hasya', many a thoughts are surfacing my mind. Most of these stories are written during my 15 years' stay in Shiroda. While going through them I am recollecting my stay at Shiroda, which I had almost forgotten. It was a small village, having natural beauty, beautiful atmosphere, those villagers who unknowingly had enlightened my mind for a story, many sweet and sour incidences, these all have a special place in my mind. Today, at this stage I can even eye "the Khandekar' during those days with a neutral mind. 1925 was the peak period for Marathi short stories, I was an active member, but by 1940 this golden era of Marathi short stories had come to an end.''‘‘१९२५ साली मी कथालेखनाला प्रारंभ केला. तेव्हापासून पुढे बारा-तेरा वर्षे, शाळेच्या धबडग्यातून जशी सवड मिळेल, तशा मी गोष्टी लिहीत असे...‘अश्रु आणि हास्य’ संग्रहातल्या तेरा गोष्टी चाळताना माझ्या मनात विविध विचारतरंग निर्माण होत आहेत. या बहुतेक गोष्टी मी शिरोड्याला असताना लिहिल्या असल्यामुळे त्या वाचताना; कालोदरात लुप्त झालेले माझे पंधरा-वीस वर्षांपूर्वीचे जीवनच जणू काही माझ्या डोळ्यांपुढे मूर्तिमंत उभे राहत आहे. त्या चिमुकल्या खेडेगावातला सुंदर निसर्ग, माझ्या कथांचे कळत नकळत स्पूâर्तिस्थान होणारी तिथली आंबटगोड माणसे, अनेक स्वादिष्ट व खारटतुरट घटना, इतकेच नव्हे तर आज ज्याच्याकडे मी तटस्थपणाने, िकबहुना कठोर टीकाकाराच्या दृष्टीने पाहू शकतो, असा त्या वेळचा कथाकार खांडेकर, या सर्वांविषयीच्या आठवणी माझ्या या विचारतरंगाबरोबर अंतर्मनातून वर येत आहेत.....’मी कथा लिहिल्या, तो काळ मराठी लघुकथेच्या पहिल्या बहराचा होता. तो बहर १९४० च्या आसपास संपला.’’
